Contemporary Arts Centre, Madrid - ICA Arquitectura
As part of a city initiative, the site of Madrid’s former municipal slaughterhouse and livestock market is currently being transformed into a centre for contemporary arts. Hooks that used to hang carcasses now display pieces of art. This project, by ICA Arquitectura, adapts a large industrial building into a forum for cultural activities. The remodelling concept is based on a system of double-height steel-pivoted doors that can be adjusted to define and enclose different sorts of space − for instance, a neutral void for art installations, or a hall for concerts and performances. Executed with confidence and sensitivity, the new parts have a toughness and rigour that plays off beautifully against the existing historic structure. Yet while the jury admired the execution, some doubts remained about the inherent practicality and effectiveness of dividing up the space.
